What is a Heat Pump?
Heat pumps are devices that transfer heat from one location to another. It can bring in heat into a room and release it outside as well. A unique feature of heat pump is that it is dual in function. It can be both a heater and a cooler. When it is in cooling mode, it works similarly to an air conditioner.
The heat pump contains a fluid known as a refrigerant. The refrigerant is an intermediary fluid found in the heat pump used to cool or heat the air. The refrigerant is pumped between two heat exchanger coils, in one coil it is evaporated at low pressure while absorbing the heat from the surrounding space. Then, it is compressed on the way to the other coil at high pressure. Afterwards it dispersed the heat that it absorbed earlier.
Air conditioners and refrigerators are both forms of heat pumps but only functions in the cooling mode. A refrigerator is basically an insulated box with a evaporator coil inside the freezer section. The evaporator absorbs the heat and pumps it outside the box where the condenser coil is attached. In the same way, the air conditioner transfers the heat inside the house and brings it outside.
As mentioned, because of the heat pumps reversing valve, its function is reversible. It can be a cooler and a heater at the same time which can offer an all-season temperature control inside your home. It can warm you in winter time, cool you during summer. Surprisingly, even in very cold winter months at 18°C, the air can hold up to 85% of the heat that it contained at 21°C.
In very cold places, the heat pump can obtain heat from the outdoor air and at the same time draw heat from the ground or ground water. This is called earth-energy, geothermal, or geoexchange.
A heat pump can be used for the whole year round. It can provide you warm air during the winter and during hot and humid summer months; it can cool up your place. What are you waiting for? Install one for your home now.
